Environmental Announcement

As you all know, I love the environment very much and I make a lot of efforts to live my life in a green manner. You also know that I report a lot of news about the environment. A lot of that news is bad news because there is a lot of bad news to report, but I am going to try to start reporting good news and practical tips to help the average citizen live in a more environmentally friendly way. The first positive update I have to announce is a great step taken by BMW.

I will probably never buy a BMW because they are not really my style (or within my price-range) but they just announced something that I am hoping other manufacturers will learn from and imitate. Hopefully before long, lots of car makers and other industries will be doing something similar to this.

A BMW factory in South Carolina has announced that they have begun a project to pipe methane gas from a nearby landfill to their manufacturing. The gas will be used to power the automaker’s paint plant, which uses about half of their assembly lines energy.

Methane gas is produced from decaying organic material in garbage and it is bad for the environment. It is one of the "greenhouse gasses" that contains dangerous amounts of carbon dioxide. It is such a great idea to capture this gas and put it to use. It not only reduces environmental pollution, it also provides FREE gas. This is a huge resource that is literally going to waste all around the world.

By utilizing previously unused energy from landfill gas, BMW Manufacturing is reducing area emissions of carbon dioxide by approximately 17,000 tons and is recovering enough energy to heat 10,000 homes per year. The quantity of greenhouse gases reduced is the equivalent of driving a car around the globe 4,300 times, or more than 100 million miles. They will also save themselves over $1,000,000 per year in fuel costs. That is just awesome all around! Read more about this here.

Just imagine the possibilities here. If one landfill produces enough gas to heat 10,000 houses, think of all the energy that we can capture from these things. The U.S. has 3,091 active landfills and over 10,000 old municipal landfills, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. That is a LOT of energy that we can use and a LOT of pollutive greenhouse gas we can prevent from entering the atmosphere.

I found out about this from an awesome environmentalist blog with lots of great press releases and practical tips called treehugger.com.

that is great news! i like your idea about posting practical advice on how people can live cleaner, greener lives. people don't usually respond well to just hearing bad news...it's always easier to hear if there is a constructive solution offered.
