In need of movie recommendations

Hi everyone, I decided that I've not been watching enough movies, so I signed up for Netflix. I already have like. . . 78 movies in my queue, but I want more.

So please, give me the 3 movies I HAVE to see. Go ahead and assume I've not seen any.

I don't know those 78 movies that you like. If I told you and there're some of them like the movies you saw. :P

I too am having a hard time watching movie -- my limited free time is taken up with my three favorite shows: 24, Lost, and Grey's Anatomy...who has time to watch a 2 hour movie in between all these great dramas?

Posted by: Anonymous on May 31, 2006 02:59 PM

YES! I'm in the same boat, but at desperate housewives in there too. And sports.

Movies that haven't been mentioned yet even though they are great:

High Fidelity - one of my favorite movies of all time
The Game - great concept that was done very well
The Usual Suspects - i like kevin spacey
K-PAX - i like kevin spacey
Heat - robert de niro vs. al pacino = winner
Training Day - if you like good cop/bad cop movies, this is the best
Searching For Bobby Fischer - one of the most overlooked movies of all time because it's about a kid and is therefore a "kid" movie, but it's one of my favorites
I Heart Huckabees - i just like the feel of it
Kung Fu Hustle - if you don't mind subtitles, this is one of the best foreign movies i've seen (granted i haven't seen all that many)

yea you should put the life aquatic with steve zissou on top.... what an amazing movie

if you ever seen it look up A Clockwork Orange, The Virgin Suicides, and Requiem For A Dream.... ummm well those movies aren't like PG rated or anything I think they're all R so yea
But an AMAZING movie thats rated R however is Trainspotting.

Plus a animated movie thats really awesome and one that everyone loves is Spirited Away... its so cool!

bias against old movies? i swear.....why don't you just go burn down a nursing home while you're at it...

Posted by: Anonymous on June 2, 2006 01:24 PM

Horrible movies i've watched(that i can think of now):

blade runner ~ it's supposed to be like a cult classic, but it was horrible, and chaotic.

hostel ~ thought it was going to be a well made gross-out em horror movie, instead it was a wanna be american pie, poorly made, not so gross, and utterly horrible.

The Conversation ~ snore.

A Clockwork Orange ~ a perverted, over the top movie, whose main point is just clouded by all the disturbing aspects of it. don't like much of Stanley Kubrick's stuff.

Resevior Dogs ~ so much profanity... didn't see the point of it. don't like much of Quentin Tarantino's stuff.

Posted by: childish on June 2, 2006 04:17 PM

I agree about Blade Runner.

Posted by: SnakeMan on June 2, 2006 07:32 PM

I really like stanley kubrick's stuff
its usually you like it or you despise it
some people find the movie 2001:Space Oddesey a joke and just :stupid" but i think its completely original and i foudn it funny i mean its completely random with that one part with the infamous dramatic music and the spaceship flying acrodss for like what 20 mins?
a bit pointless in some parts but overall i would give that movie a A-

A clockwork Orange is highly disturbing if you get creeped out easy but people have to remember, its off the book. Kubrick didn't come up with all those disturbing but really at the same time thought provoking images... the author did
but yea... i think for a week i got really haunted by Beethoven

3 movies...

The Fellowship of the Ring
The Two Towers
The Return of the King

Just kidding. But not really. Did you see Dodgeball?

Okay, 3 real recommendations, none very flashy:

The Straight Story
Haiku Tunnel
Fight Club

Honorable mentions:

The Station Agent
Wedding Crashers
Delicatessen

I understand your thing against old movies. I used to have that thing, and I still do to some extent. The concept of watching an old movie just isn't exciting. But I find that when I do see an old movie, I'm blown away. I recently saw Gaslight (1940), and it was excellent. The Philadelphia Story was great too. Holiday Inn... delightful. The dialogue in older movies of repute is often remarkably well-written. It's more stage-like, which makes it less realistic, but much more artistic, in my opinion. And come on, who goes to the movies for realistic? I remember someone saying something about reel life vs. real life. I think that we, as a generation, have an acquired desire to be taken in by movies. This is why realistic prevails over artistic. It's escapism. But I should quit before this turns into an essay.

Oh, and Bladerunner is one of my favorite movies of all time. Great story. Fantastic cinematography, Strong script, direction, and character development. An appropriate soundtrack.

the thing about old movies for me, I normally do end up liking them but. .. it's almost like homework or exercising or something. . . something that I know I'll enjoy and I know it's good for me, but I don't really look forward to it at all.

I have liked Citizen Kane, It's a Wonderful Life, Mr. Smith goes to Washington, Ben Hur, etc. Actually loved them. . .it's just. . . I don't really look forward to watching them.

Posted by: jason on June 3, 2006 12:47 PM

The Straight Story is by far the worst movie I have ever seen.

Ok so I'm not going to read through all of these but here are 2 must sees:

1. Slap Shot (come on it really is funny)
2. And of course a bit of a romantic one for the ladies...
The Crow (Come on ladies when has a guy ever come back from the dead to avenge your death?? I'll bet I can say NEVER!)
