Compare Us

Well whenever I tell someone that I'm in a band the inevitable question that comes up is "what band do you guys sound like?". Personally I don't think we match up to anyone very good so I never know what to say. I'd be interested to know who you guys think we sound like.

The other question that always comes up is "Are you guys a Christian band?". I think there's a big difference between a Christian worship band (which people usually think of as a typical "Christian" band) and just a Christian band. So I usually answer the question as "yes, we're all Christians, but it might be hard to tell were a Christian band from our lyrics". If you want to read a really in depth post on this topic Jason did a great post on the subject awhile back.

I was listening to "Open my Eyes" using Windows Media Player, and the band that popped up some bad 80's metal band called "Talas"

Talas!I don't think you sound anything like them.

I don't know who we sound like, so there's how I answer the first question. I usualy just end up either describing our music or (if the ipod is handy) showing off one of our songs.

As far as the christian band issue, I always say that we are not a christian band but we are all christians. Christian bands have gotten a pretty name for themselves and I generally don't like to be lumped in with them. I think that being a christian band limits your audiance to christian kids, and I want lots of people to be able to hear our music and be affected by it. Of course since we are christians, that shines through because we write about what we believe in. I think that it is a strange question, but in a way, the answers are sort of like 6 and one half dozen. At this point, it doesn't matter because we are not signed to a lable that restricts our audience at all.

What do the rest of you guys think?

That was actually me up above. As much as I like Blogger, it annoys me that the default setting is anonymous.

Well I guess no one thinks we sound like anyone.....

This doesn't have a lot to do with this post but I was just wondering if anyone had gotten the Lostprophets cd. Their song, "Last Train", is a really good song and I was thinking of trying out their cd. If anyone has gotten it what'd you think of it?

Collin,

How do you usually describe our music? I don't even know what to say when people ask that. I used to say "alternative", or "acoustic rock", but we have a lot of electric guitar in our music too. I don't really think either of those descriptions really fit in with our music perfect.

David, I actually don't know the lost Prophets, so I can't help you there. When I describe our music there are several things I say. I always say that it is very melodic. I also say that we like our alternative sound, but there is often an undertone of acoustic / finger-style guitar that adds someting very different. I usually stay away from the "acoustic based rock" classification because that makes people think of cheesey pop bands (at least that's what I think of). I end up saying that it is driving and passionate, but very melodic and multilayered.

We've been compared to Incubus, Dashboard Confessional, Something Corporate, but none of those really describe our sound very well. I think we sound like ourselves.
As for acoustic based rock, I'm hesitant to put us in that category because it limits us. We play some acoustic based rock, but we also play other kinds of rock. And maybe we'll play some folk sometimes too. I'd just say rock. Who knows.

I just say that we stick it to the man, and we're totally rad.

Don't forget the equally viable option of poking him gently.

I listened to all of your songs off of Isaiah's computer on Friday night, and your music honestly doesn't remind me of any other band. I would decribe the sound as rooted in rock, but unafriad of the influence of folk, and occasionally pop. The spirit of your music lies in the lyrics and the vocals, and everything else, while important (otherwise you guys would be poets), provides the setting or backdrop.
But that's just off the top of my head.

Susan thanks for the compliment about the lyrics and vocals. I do want to say though that I love being in a band because everyone adds so much more to the song than just the vocals and lyrics, and even with a song that I wrote completely, it ends up being so much better. It's one of the reasons I'm hesitant to answer what a certain song is about, because everyone made their contribution to what it's about. . . and I don't want to just speak for my part.
