The First Debate
So far I'd have to say Bush is winning. This is a good format for him, you can tell he truly believes the things he is saying. Considering that 25% of likely voters say the debates could change their minds, it's important to have a good showing. Kerry looks and sounds like Lurch from the Addam's Family, and has the difficult task of defending a shifting sand of positions.
By the way Kerry, you said the tax cut went into the wealthiest American's pockets -- like yours. No Kerry, it was primarily an income tax cut, you live off of your ketchup mama's inheritance, which isn't income, it's just this nice huge nest egg, impervious to taxes. Taxes raised or lowered don't affect your life at all, unlike the true middle class, who actually have to have an income to survive, save, and invest.
All of the questions are about Iraq. Not to say they shouldn't be, but my goodness, there are other issues, you know?

I am abstaining from politics. I don't like either of them. Neither of them compel me to want to vote. I can't get passionate about it. No matter how hard I try. It's just not happening. I just see it as a bunch of wealthy boys playing king of the hill.
I agree with HoSco here, I don't like either of them. My primary criteria for voting this year is, who is less likely to draft me. Frankly, both seem pretty likely to get us into an even bigger war. I'm not opposed to fighting in a just and needed war, but I don't see the justice of or the need for this war.
Also, why are we in Iraq anyway? For real, if it was about weapons of mass destruction we should have gone after N Korea and if it was about human rights we should have gone after Sudan. Can somebody give me a logical answer besides "oil"?
I like that phrase "ketchup momma" just like Susan is my sugar momma..:)
btw: i know you wern't hastling me on sunday.. just having a little fun with words
I gotta confess, I wanted to watch the debate, but I saw "Hero" instead (pretty good movie). I would have stayed home to watch Kerry and Bush, but all the cool kids were going to the movies, and I just can't resist peer pressure.
Oooh... politics are annoying... but we do need a president obviously... If I were voting, Bush would have my vote. However, NEXT election. I definitely agree that neither candidate is perfect but I would rather have a president that fears God than that doesn't. My take. God Bless!

Well as for the other issues besides Iraq or North Korea, etc., we still have more debates to come. Next Friday is the next one - even if you think politics are annoying I'd recommend watching it :) Kerry just sounded so fake...he definitely has a head full of knowledge about all these events, but I don't trust him and I don't trust the absolutes he gives...it's just political lies. For instance, he said a few times during the debate that he would rid the world of weapons of mass destruction (I think that's what it was....) in 4 years...some things just might not be possible and it's stupid to promise something that is not in your control to be able to succeed in. Plus I was confused on whether Kerry was for or against the war...it seemed his opinions changed when looked on in different lights the questions shed. On the other side, I thought Bush could have been a little more effective...I don't mind his poor speaking skills, it just seemed like Kerry accused him of things that Bush didn't even address in his rebuttals. Who knows though, maybe that's the way that's more effective for Bush. We shall see...I encourage all to watch the upcoming debates!!

Ian, we are at war because of terrorism. Weapons of mass destruction are a big part, but the ideology is that as long as these terrorist groups are functioning, more horrible things such as 9/11 and the Russian school take-over will happen. The war is to make the world a better place, which is something all you guys have made clear you want? War is costly but I believe some people are evil and we can't tolerate evil and evil won't be talked out of being evil. Iraq has been supressed for a long time! Bush says that the 'president' (i forget what rank he is..) over in Iraq is grateful to us and they will have elections hopefully by January that will make Iraq a democracy. Setting up good foundations and laws and everything a democracy insinuates will give terrorists less of a 'play ground' to operate on. That's why, I believe, we are at war...and to me that sounds pretty necessary...

Rachel,
How is Iraq because I assume from your comments you are signed up and fighting in that war and not simply "supporting the troops" by making them a cake or something. Dont we desperately need more troops over there? So put your money where your mouth is!
I saw George Carlin last night on the Bill Mehere show and he had a great idea...a rich kid's draft. Let those who are benefitting from a war fight the war. Let the oil princes and Halliburton fat cats send their kids over there.
So why does everyone assume that Bush is a born-again Christian? Does anyone remember a couple of years ago when he called a reporter an "asshole"? How about all those people he legally murdered on death row? Do you think Jesus would carpet bomb civilians? Do you think that Jesus would use weapons of mass destruction as an excuse to start a war?
i am going to go watch tv.
josh
Josh? I would like to ask you a question. ::With all due respect the whole way through:: Now, certainly I don't and cannot condone any and all of these actions, but, have you ever done something that you weren't proud of since you became a Christian? I dunno, flicked someone off, sworn at them, called them a name such as the aforementioned "asshole"? Did he "murder" those people on death row because he didn't like them or because they had committed crimes for which the punishment was death? (or do you just not believe in capital punishment?) God led David (not Watts :-P... neway) into war for HIS kingdom. Do I think Bush is perfect? hek no. Do I think that he has done dishonorable things? hek ya. I don't support everything he does, but I'm not gonna walk around screaming that he's an "American Idiot" or some such phrase. I DO think it is sad that people are losing their lives. However, war isn't pretty, but freedom isn't free, and IF we are fighting terrorism I think it's a right thing to do. I don't know what Bush's reasons are. I don't. I'm not inside his head. But I will support whoever is leading the country whether it be Bush or Kerry because God is in control and we are supposed to render to Caesar what is Caesar's... (Taxes, but I think it applies) God bless!
I lots of opinions about lots of things that compel me to vote and think the way I do. But I'm not in the mood for that right now. I am in the mood to be very 7th grade at this moment.
I work for a company that has a website that millions of people use. Sometimes people write things into the email center that are just plain hilarious (yes, they all get read by someone).. We used to have tiles of pictures, representing all the people who could be using our site at any time. "rainbow of users" There was one older gentleman who was in one of the tiles. We got an email from a user and it said, "Please take down the picture of the old guy who looks like Dick Cheney. I just can't take his cold, dead, evil eyes staring at me while I try to log in."
There was an even better one a few months later, when we started running credit card tv ads with the annoying lady behind the counter. She was featured in an ad on the site, and a user wrote in-- "Please! For crying out loud, get rid of the ads on the site that have that woman!! Her eyes follow me like some creepy painting housed in a haunted mansion in a Scooby Doo cartoon! It's like she's sitting on your site, and all she can think about are donuts! Like.. mmmm.. donuts.. I wonder if I can get a donut credit card?"
She is now interally referred to as the 'donut lady.'
hehe...
"Now this here story I'm about to unfold took place in the early nineties - just about the time of our conflict with Sad'm and the eye-rackies. I only mention it because sometimes there's a man, I wont say a hero, cause, what's a hero? Sometimes, there's a man. And I'm talkin' about the Dude here - The dude from Los Angeles. Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that's the Dude. The Dude, from Los Angeles. And even if he's a lazy man, and the Dude was most certainly that. Quite possibly the laziest in all of Los Angeles County. Which would place him high in the runnin' for laziest worldwide. Sometimes there's a man, sometimes, there's a man... Well, I lost my train of thought here. "
say wha???
"Rachel,

Wow! I had no idea what I said could ever invoke such a reprimand as this! I gathered my information from what I've read and what the leaders of this country have said. If you want to poke fun and call that a personal relationship with Iraq then, please, be my guest?... -about our troops - I do support them. I support them like any other patriotic citizen of past wars who were not involved in the fighting. I support them by praying for them and by standing up for what they're over there fighting for (and by trying not to take them for granted!). That's all...no offense, no 'big mouth'ing - I understand that political views are a touchy subject, and I don't mean to come across as insensitive to anyone, whether it be people of opposing views or the men and women fighting for freedom...trust me...but if you think I'm impudent anyway, then so be it.
"Do you think that Jesus would use weapons of mass destruction as an excuse to start a war?"
-An excuse? Wow, if it were an excuse then all the people in Washington who voted for this excuse of a war (including Kerry) are horrible people. If you want to talk in terms of excuses, how about the protection of the American people? About the people in Iraq, etc? I don't like war either and it's really hard to look at how much our mentality has changed since 9/11/01. We are wiser yet sadder...or at least sadder for now... But it's definitely a good thing as I think we all agree...as a result more lives will be saved in future...
-Rachel
Again, I'm going all middle school here... Have you ever noticed how funny the cabinet members names are? Tommy Thompson.. helloooo?
I am in total support of our troops fighting in Iraq, I don't get why people can't see why they are fighting there! Sure, one reason was the possibility of WMD, and there were links to Al Queda in Iraq. But I think the biggest reason was that it was an evil dictatorship. Saddam Hussain needed to be stopped, and it was a good thing he WAS stopped!
Is the only freedom worth fighting for our own? This is a good question to ask yourself when thinking of wars, IE war in Iraq. The mission in Iraq was to liberate the thousands of people pursicuted by Saddam, and it has been a success. Sure there have been casualties, on both US and civillian sides, but there must be a price for freedom.
Another thing to address, I don't understand why some of you are so terrified of the draft? Don't you belive in paying your country for what it has given you? Shouldn't you respond in helping your country or other countries in need (Which is the only time the draft is used)? I love my country, and my leaders, and I will support both strongly. If my final price to pay for my country is death, I will gladly pay it. This may seem odd to some, but I see no shame in dying for my county, I don't think anyone who lives in america should.
Well, that's all I have to say for now, I am too tired to continue-
DarkSiege (AKA FatChicken)
i think that evil dictators all over the world are high-fiving each other and thanking God they dont have oil.
no wmds, no ties to al-queda, Saddam was brutal but then so are we-the whole sexual torture bit...maybe they didn't want saddam but they they dont want america either

Sure, what a few soldiers did to a few prisoners in one prison was horrible, but I don't think it even begins to compare to the burtality and mass murder dictactors like Saddam commit.
Now I would just like to say I'm not completely possitive we should have gone to war with Saddam, but I definitely lean towards supporting the war instead of opposing it. Here's why.
Saddam was an evil dictator who suppressed and tortured his people. Of course he's not the only one in the world to do this, there are other dictactors too. But, we did make a big example out of him. I think this will make other dictactors think twice before they choose to ignore global demands.
It's too bad the global community didn't have the balls to back up their sanctions and demands, but I appreciate that Bush did. After ten years of having weapons inspectors let in and then kicked out and having other demands not met, I think it was time for some action.
It's too bad Bush used WMD's as such a big reason for going to war and not other more importent reasons such as human rights violations. Now he looks pretty ignorant in that aspect of the war. I think that also speaks to the mindset that the American people have, we're more concerned about our own safety then the genocide that occurs in other countries every day. Lets face it, if Bush had used human rights violations as his main call to war and not WMD's then the American public would have firmly been against it.
Wow I said "it's too bad" twice right in a row.....I think I'm turning into Ian.....j/k man :0)
Repetition can be a powerful verbal tool, David... For example, it was used all over the place during the debate Thursday night!!
Anybody watch the vice president debate tonight? if so, what did you think?
Good question Ian. I find life is much more uncomplicated when I let the popular media tell me who won. ;)
dennis miller said last night on Leno, which was taped earlier inthe day, that edward's advisors should put numbers on his body parts so after Cheney, the heart attack kid, is done tearing him to pieces they can put the parts back together. I don't think Cheney destroyed edwards, but he did win, as most polls are now showing. i think he did alot to help his campaign recover after the presidential debate, which really didn't go that well for bush.... anybody think edwards looks like a ken doll?
el guapo
Anybody think that Kerry looks like Barby?
I watched the debate and thought it was very interesting. I do not like John Edwards - he came across as rude and a little whiny. He did his best to demean the Bush campaign - actually, it almost seemed like he was putting Bush and Cheney on trial. I think the Kerry campaign is the biggest smear campaign I have ever heard of in U.S. history. I thought it was great when Cheney called Edwards on some of the statistics he was using by saying either that the info. was completely wrong or that it was outdated (i.e. the 90% death rate in Iraq being Americans and the job thing...). Cheney is never in the lime-light too much, and I don't think I've ever heard him speak - I found him to be a strong public speaker with a great deal of knowledge and understanding about the matters a president and vice president must face. Edwards is a good public speaker, too, but it seemed like Cheney's experience totally made him look out of place - especially when Cheney was talking about Edward's poor Senate record. One thing about Cheney though, I don't understand why he didn't talk more about the gay marriage deal - I know his family situation, but I don't think it helped his cause any. Well, the debate was interesting...and I think the Bush campaign knows they now have to focus more on domestic matters now that (God willing) the American troops will soon be withdrawing from Iraq.
-Rachel
Good analysis, Rachel, thanks. What is Cheny's family situation that you mentioned. (sorry that I am a political idiot, I just don't follow that stuff like a true patriot should.)
There's an election going on?????? j/k :-p
Yes there is! I'm voting for Cat Stevens
Cheney's situation is that his daughter is a lesbian. I didn't know that till I watched the debate. Cheney's views differ from President Bush's beliefs on gay marriage/partnership (whatever..) - however, in the debate Cheney said that even though they have this difference in opinion, he supports the president. I felt bad for Cheney, but I thought he should have stated Bush's stance on this issue rather than not saying anything about it at all.
-Rachel
Dude! Yes, I'm going to write in Cat Stevens!
