So Ian is to be commended, the tenacious man kept calling and calling and calling. . . and finally got us a date at the Grape Street Pub! This is the premier club in Philly for original music, so that is pretty exciting. It's also a tiny bit nervewracking, as apparently they have two people who watch your set and rate you on stage presence, musicianship, reaction of crowd, etc. . .and decide if they ever want to have you back. Well, you just have to do your best, you know? Anyway, it's December 8th.
I had a strange experience yesterday. Due to my younger sister's obsession with an artist I had never heard, named Howie Day. .. and the "older person" who was originally going to take her to see his concert's sudden and unexpected illness, I went to a concert for someone who I had never heard of.
It was pretty good. Actually, one of the opening acts was more the revelation for me, a modern folky bluegrassy band called Nickel Creek. They featured a fiddle, an upright bass, a mandolin, and a guitar, and they just jammed. They had excellent stage presence. Check them out, they were alot of fun. If you ever have the chance to see them live, do it.
Howie Day is kind of cool, he has pedals to loop all his guitar and vocal parts and basically creates these very lush arrangements on the fly. It was pretty impressive. Don't know if his recorded stuff is like this, but if you have the chance to see him live, it was a worthwhile experience.
It was at the Electric Factory. Oh man, seeing MUSE there is going to be incredible!
I shot a gun for the first time yesterday. Actually, I shot a shotgun, a rifle, and a 9mm handgun. The Collin Palkovitz Gun Extravaganza. And I was HORRIBLE. I couldn't hit a skeet. I couldn't hit a drawn target. I couldn't even hit a doghouse from 15 feet away. Oh well. Maybe I'll get better. Maybe I won't. Either way, scratch "assasin" off the list of careers I may pursue in the future.
Collin, incidentally, is an incredible shot. He could be a sniper. I wouldn't mess with him, he's like a solider of fortune. He hit every skeet, every single one.

Ian is the man. Thanks for getting us in buddy.
Nicklecreek is the bomb-diggety. They are insanely talented.
I want a full report on the Grape Street and BSF concerts. Detailed log, pictures, setlist, guest reviews... grin.
Rock on.
J
JD, I know you want a detailed report, but we want you to COME to those shows.
Well, I guess you all can figure out from Jason't post that I will NOT be voting for Mr gun control (I mean John Kerry). I just really enjoy shooting things.
colin colin...do you really think j. kerry is that much of a gun control nut? he is a hunter himself. as far guns go, do you really believe in completely unregulated access to anything at any time? i like shooting guns too, but i dont like them pointed at me. and i dont see anything wrong with a cooling off period. personally i think that guns should be illegal (i mean if pot is, come on, you know guns are way more dangerous!) i've been to countries that heave stricter gun control laws and just have felt safer.
josh
more gun control and more pot? Yes please.
If criminals wanted guns bad enough, they would find a way to get them I'm sure. Certainly, I don't want a gun pointed at my head, but there are benefits to hunting and the like, and simple skeet shooting or whatever can be fun too, as you acknowledged. I don't want someone telling me "Hey, you can't have a gun!" I don't even go hunting, but my dad and brother do and the deer surely tastes good :-) Cliche, yes, but guns don't kill, people do. I forget what the statistics were or what exactly what it was about... bad example eh? but there was something sayijng that bathtubs kill more people than guns or some other thing that there is/was argument for banning, and therefore someone asked if we should ban bathtubs... Now, obviously people don't normally kill each other with bathtubs.. ok I HAVE gotten off topic now. Point is, keep the guns and keep the kids... (a.k.a. I'm pro life)
I once heard it said: "If guns are illegal than only criminals will have them." Interesting. North Dakota has the higest per capita gun ownership, and the lowest crime rates in the nation. Also interesting.
I'm all for a "cooling off" period, and I think it's fine to ban things like grenade launchers, bazookas, 75 round clips and conversion kits to fully automize assault rifles, (all of which you can buy from the comfort of your own home on gunbroker.com) but you have to admit that there is more to our problems of violence than just guns.
WELL SAID!
So you think skeet shooting is simple huh Sha'Uri? That's what Jason thought too.
It's an art. No two ways about it. It's a hilbilly-rednecked-kickbutt art.
I was pretty amazed that just about anybody could buy a gun, shooting one really shows you how much power they have. I'd think that maybe an intensive training class should be a prerequisite. You have to pass a driver test to drive a car, and a gun is just as deadly. . .
It is deadly. Like, if collin wanted to kill any one of you he could, and if Jason tried not to shoot any of you... either way I'd run.
Ok... ok... I don't know if I could hit a clay pidgeon either. I was using it as an example. :-D Btw, Collin, I was wearing a look machine shirt and in BrewHAHA, some guy asked if I knew you guys and said he had hired your wife or something... IT'S A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL!!! neway.. thout it was cool
more gun control laws...bad idea. if you think it through, the only ones that will follow the laws will be the ones who wouldn't be using them to kill people anyway. you make it so that nobody can legally get a gun, then you have a bunch of unarmed law-abiding citizens, then you have the criminals who still have guns because they don't give a crap about gun laws.
How many things would you actually, literally, give a crap for?
Christians are a funny bunch. let's look at this...does anyone think Jesus would be a gun nut? i am not saying he would not be, but some one would have to prove it pretty convincingly. I know in other countries, banning guns does go a long way towards bringing down the level of violent crime. In the UK, nobody has guns, not even the cops. And i have felt safer in any randon Euro city (including Amsterdam) than any city in the US after dark.
my thoughts on hunting: equal the playing field...i would love to see Ian chasing down a deer unarmed and biting his neck to bring him down. much more fair.
josh
I've got to agree with you there, Josh. Hunting is unfair! People are always talking about how it is a "sport" but it seems pretty one sided to me. If it's something like hunting a lion with a spear then I would consider that a little more fair.
I actually hate it when people hunt just for "sport." However, I don't mind it if people hunt to eat the meat. I eat meat anyway, and it is an animal that somebody killed. You have to be able to take moral responsibility for the death of the animal you are eating, and if you can do that you may as well kill it yourself. I understand though, that it is sad to kill a wild animal that is struggeling to get by as we take over it's habitat.
Josh, my question for you is can you take moral responsibility for all of the corn, potatoes, and carrots you have killed?
But God did give us dominion over the animals and I'm fairly certain that he told us to eat'm too... so if it is for food, and the meat &/or other stuff ain't goin' to waste, I'm fine with it!
I have been known to bring down a wild Tofudebeast with my bare hands..
"And i have felt safer in any randon Euro city (including Amsterdam) than any city in the US after dark."
well now you're getting into simple visceral reactions...but i prefer to let mynym address those :D.
"I know in other countries, banning guns does go a long way towards bringing down the level of violent crime."
i wouldn't say a long way... it's true that this has worked, to some extent, in some countries but for the most part statistical data is against it. (yes, i actually researched this at one time...) there was a study done a while back where 2 cities were compared: in the first town, guns were completely illegal, in the other they were mandatory. over a certain period of time it was found that the city with guns had a dramatically lower crime level than the other. does this make sense? well if you were a criminal out to do some sort of illegal harm to someone, would you rather do it to someone who probably had a gun or someone who didn't? personally i'd go with the unarmed guy....but that's just me...
the old dominion line, eh? so let's just pollute and mine and rape this beautiful world God created for us. God wants us to destroy it right! Everyone knows God loves big business and oil companies and most especially the meat industry. lets ignore global warning and no drinkable water and less and less habitats for our children. God gave us the right right!
First of all, I never said that we should "rape" the world. I do think however that we are supposed to use what God has given us, but wisely. Do you believe in scripture? I honestly don't know. Maybe you do, maybe you don't, but you sure as peanut butter don't seem to agree with that scripture. When was the last time you had a hamburger? May I suggest eating one now? they are very good. ok... I'm done. Someone tell me if I go over a line with my commenting please
how about this, the first stated purpose of man...
Genesis 2:15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
Subdue the earth? If that means taking care of all of it! Please, focus on this part of the scriture! and about filling the earth, I think we have more than accomplished this mandate.
It's time for people to realize that God created the Natural world "and saw that it was good." It was good before people were made, it's there for more than just our use. Think about it, is a little worm in thailand necessary for your survival? How about the farthest smallest star in the galaxy? No. God created things because he is creative, and what he made is good. Let's not destroy it.
Ps. your hamburger comment was a little over the line.
In general, just about any comment about hamburgers is going to end up being over the line.
I once killed and ate a fish that I caught and experienced a large amount of guilt over the act. .. so yes I am a meat-eating hypocrite. But I don't really think eating meat is wrong.
But I completely respect those who live a meat-free lifestyle, it's a huge amount of discipline that I think is to their benefit. So I don't really argue with them, because they are probably better off than I. It's like when people try to talk me into drinking coffee or alchohol, I just kind of wonder, "WHY?" What benefit would there be to me to start liking these things?
so after your comment, sh'uria, i decided that maybe i should eat a hamburger because they are good..whatever dude. people are so threatened by those who disagree with them. i guess you fear it might accidently make you think outside your little world huh? education my friend. i only respect meat eaters who spent time in a slaughter house and truly know what they are doing. you know, for a religion based on love sometimes i feel a lot of hate on this board. j
God told us to eat animals? where is this? in today's world of factory farming and hormones and other ickiness? i sure as peanut butter what are you talkng about? j
I don't eat mammals. I'm still into egg-layers though. Even though I know what goes on in the entire egg-to-plate process for most land animals. (Hello, this is delmarva, home to chickens and genetically modified soybeans)
Everybody draws their lines in different places, and that doesn't necessarily make them right or wrong. I personally can't look into the big brown eyes of a cow and think 'mmm.. burger.' (But my husband can. And that's his right.)
I have meat about.. eh, maybe 1 time a week on average, mostly less. When I have an animal based protein, it's mostly wild pacific salmon. No farm raised, died pink and stuffed with antibiotics fish for me, thanks.
Does that make you meat eaters wrong? Of course not, and I'd like you to make informed choices about what you're eating and who you're supporting when you head to the grocery store. You can still eat meat and support sustainable, humane agribusiness, but you need to just learn a bit more about your choices.
'Free Range' and 'organic' are your best starts when reading the labels on the foods you buy. The majority of these do not hype their animals up on fattening, drug laced feeds (mainly antibiotics and growth hormones).
For those of you who are scoffing as you read this, just do some basic thinking-- most drugs, including antibiotics, have warning labels for lactating and pregnant women, that the drugs are secreted in breast milk. If you give a cow these, and then drink the cow's milk-- tada! So buy organic or free range milk. You can still drink your milk and.. frankly not get a dose of penicillin each time.
How did this become a conversation about eating animals. I shot SKEETS!? And I might eat off of a skeet, but I wouldn't eat one.
I don't think that telling someone to eat a hamburger rises to the level of "hate." but that's just me. . . :-)
hate again. and then more hate. i hate hate. how about a name change to the hate machine ( i actually really like that!) i hate when people treat me with derision, that's all
Then I'm sorry, forgive me?
just thought I'd say that I butchered a deer for ten hours one day... that said I'm not claiming I'm perfect or always right (same thing?) post above still goes... (the sorry 'bout crossin' any lines)
I love all ya'll... whether or not I disagree with you.
no problems no worries..hey who is going to see the LM on Saturday? j
David? got anymore tickets? and how much are they? can you IM me? (assuming you know who I am...)
I'm deffinately going!
iYa lo creo! I should hope so! (I think?)
Jason! Can't you see what's happening here? The SKEET industry is what's holding us back, man! They're the product of our government within a government! Can't you see?! Are you blind man!?
funny...very funny.....where did the word skeet come from?
You know, like "from the window to the wall!... till all skeet skeet skeet...
I just thought it'd be nice to have an even number... 40 posts here... a nice number..... whee!!! ok... <3
