Climbing

Dangling, suspended 100 feet above bits of broken rock and a mountain slope plunging into the valley below. We’re there, clinging to the rocks, carefully making our way upward. “I’ve got a good hold.” “Grab my hand, I’ve got nothing.” We’re edging along ledges, wiggling up crevices, doing our best to push ourselves almost to the limit. Almost… but no farther. We’re getting higher, it’s at the place where a slip would be deadly, but we don’t slip. We take things slowly and carefully.

Finally we’re getting close to the top. One last push, then Shane reaches his hand up over the edge, finds a crack, and pulls himself up. From where I am part way up the face I hear a shout, “HOLY [Explicative Deleted]!!! You free climbed that?” Up on the top of the cliff is a group of people who hiked up a trail that goes around the back of the mountain and comes out where Shane had just climbed over. Lots of people hike up there, it’s an amazing view of the Appalachians and the leaves were at their peak. There was a group of people up there who had been filming some sort documentary. Now their jaws just hung open as they stared in disbelief. As I come up over another part of the cliff their eyes popped open in shock. “You didn’t, um… come from down there did you? You didn’t… climb up that?” People were crawling to the edge and looking down, stunned. We shrugged, and walked away… and did it again.

Ps. We are actually very safe and careful people.

Once I was at a state park in Maryland with the Palkovitz boys and some other assorted wild men. They take many more risks than I do. One included jumping a 3 foot wide crevice that plummeted a good 100 ft if you were to miss the other side. And what covered both sides of this death pit? Wet moss. I stood there for a moment, lining up the situation. On the one hand I wanted them to respect me. On the other, I wanted to live and be around for my wife, kids, and friends. I backed down. They were very polite about it. Then I heard a loud noise and Ian slipped on the moss flat on his face in less than a second -- VERY close to the edge. Ever since then I'm not so sure they are as safe and in control as they say.

I hold firmly to the belief that they are not extremely cautious people, but neither do I think that they are exceedingly dangerous... yeah... ok... Congrats guys!

yeah...my dad and a group of people from my church were hiking on the AT last weekend. they stopped for a break and were watching a couple climbing up a rock face. well, the guy slipped and apparently didn't set his cams so well...he ended up falling 75 feet..ouch..he survived but broke himself in several places
(don't get me wrong, i'm about as un-safety conscious as they come... just don't kill yourself, it could be bad for your music carreer :p )

You know, life is full of huge risks! Think about driving, you have several lives in your hand, and if you move your hand maybe two inches you and whoever is with you could be instantly killed. Two inches from death... that's not too far. We have these risks in our lives, but we decide that they are worth it. The quality of our lives will be that much better because of our increased mobility that it makes the risks worth it.

The thing about taking risks is that you should do it carefully. You need to have some kind of idea of your odds, and you need to believe that it is worth the possible consequences. Also, maybe the most important thing is to know your own limits, and stay inside of them. For instance, I know what I can climb, and I know what I can't. If I don't have ropes I only climb things that I know for sure that I can do. Also, you can't be stupid. Like the day Jason is talking about, we didn't do any real climbing because we knew the rocks were slick.

I've been listening a lot to this band called Name Taken. They are awesome! Well in one of their songs is this quote. It says, "A life worth living can't be safe." I have been wondering about that... What do you think?

I think risks are only worth taking for people who think there is really no way something would happen to them. For instance, if I knew I was going to die in a car accident, I don't think driving around in cars would be worth it. I'd horse and buggy it around town. Or walk. Or whatever. But the increased mobility isn't worth dying over. It's worth the "risk" of dying, but none of us really think that's going to happen to us.

Yes I understand you now Ian and i know you know what you can climb or not i just get worried. Sorry but i know now that your careful but then that quote you said...well it got me thinking too. Living your life to its fullest has like all the risks in the world...i guess you can never be safe. And i've been thinking some more about that lol and i think everyones at risk just like you said Ian. Even i am by being on my computer I mean its a low risk (like my bookcase toppling over me or something) but its still there and everyday invovles these dangers. Whether its high or extremely low but a life worth living is what i know i strive for but its full of alot of risks like everything is. lol my friend said to me once when i was about to jump this trapeze thingy that hey heres my one chance...if i never do it ill be in regret forever. I can never be safe so why try and start to be cauious now. Jump it and ill feel a alot better. I did and i made it and it was the best! We can always try and be safe but we're never completely and uterlly safe. So then who are you guys?
Do you think before you leap or vise versa?
I know i mostly just do it because im stupid but lately i've been thinking before i go.

thinking is for sissy and girlie men. you beleive ian thinks, at all? ha. you have him mistaken for someone else. i mean come on, he's going to another country with me for a couple weeks, i've never heard of such an act of stupidity in my life.

First off...im not a guy lol and secondly guys who think arent sissy and girlie. Actually deep thinking and such is a great thing to do. You have to think for yourself sometime soon so why not start now? Anyways i think Ian is very smart and thinks alot of things i wouldnt. Which means he will probably always be way smarter than me in tons of things lol. Why would believing he's very thoughtful be stupid? Eh i dont know i guess im missing something here lol. Im always confused so sorry if im slow sometimes but I know Ian is careful in decisions because Ian said it himself. Oh well no use in that because I maybe wrong or not.

first off, ian doesn't have a 4.0 in college, b/c ud hasn't given his grades out yet, so it is impossible for him to have a 4.0, though he'll probably get it, i don't doubt that. secondly, that whole post was sarcastic, you know a joke. thirdly, i', a little hungry right now. fourly, most of the joke was aimed at myself b/c the act of stupidity was going to Venezuela WITH ME. So the joke was on me. if you still want to, you can thrashing again. my most not so humble apologies.

My name is EL GUAPO
