Getting found by search engines.

So as you know, I work with computers for a living (no... The Look Machine does not quite pay the bills). One thing that I have been learning about recently is how search engines work. Basically they crawl throughout the internet like worms and find content on a site that is searchable content (this is getting nerdy really quickly). We have been experimenting with different ways to have web our web site show up in the search engines. Partially through this effort (and partially due to traffic) we are doing pretty well in the search engines.

I like to check this out from time to time. Try this fun little experiment if you like. Go to Google (my favorite search engine) and type in "The Look Machine." It doesn't matter if you use quotes or not, we are the first hit. Cool Huh? Well try these other ones (they need to be in quotes and you may have to look past the first hit)..."real UFO Sighting" "listen to new U2 songs" "Ghost caught on video" "Swinging bed" Disposable socks" and my personal favorite... (thanks to MyNym) "Mental Retards."

Also there is one more search that you left out.
"Who the f*** is that f*****?"
seventy-seven people found the look machine last week alone from searching for those words.

I think you should all know, in the month of November we averaged 178 visits every day. That's really good! You have to undersdand that a visit is very different from a "hit" all those free counters on web sites count hits, which happen every time the page is refreshed or a new page is accessed. We've had nearly 400,000 hits. A visit means a person came to the site, it doesn't count refreshes or anything unless they are at least 30 minutes apart. (I'm becomeing a pseudo-nerd really quickly, I don't actually know anything about computers, I just listened to Collin and Jason talking about it.)

You should also know that yesterday someone found our site by searching "how to dance with the devil" That was also thanks to MyNym.

that's great, congratulations! your weblog in particular is pretty unique... it's great!

just out of curiosity, how many downloads have you had off your download page? (hint- we need more new music!)

and are you guys moving merchandise?

Actually, you'd be surprised. We have about 150 downloads per month. But you would probably be interested to know that there is a new download in the works. It will be all acoustic and beautiful. Jase and Ian and I put together a nice new song that will be available soon. We'll keep you posted.

Also, we move a lot of merchandise. We do this mostly at shows, not online, but we actually do sellquite a bit of stuff.

Here is another search engine tidbit. If you search "save the arctic" we are currently in spot #9 out of the entire internet.

Wow! That is nothing short of amazing. With all the environmentalists out there, i was sure we would be like 3,000th or something.

Here is something else amazing. Google this... "Shooting a film"

We are the 2'nd out of 46,500. Our rise to the top will not even be related to music. We are going to get famous for inventing swinging beds and disposable socks or someting else totally random.

I specifically put spider files on my domain to keep search engines from indexing it...

but that's REALLY nerdy and it's probably going to take too long to explain..
