The Polar Express

Yesterday my wife was hosting a shower at our house. That meant that I had the responsibility of getting the kids out of the house. And I also took my nephew and niece. We had a really good time. First we went to Friendly's, and then we saw the Polar Express.

I had heard bad things about the Polar Express, but I was pleasantly surprised. The animation was not quite perfect (for realism), but it was extraordinary non-the-less, and the action was actually fairly non-stop. Mostly I was just happy because it was interesting enough to charm a 2 year old and a couple of 5 year olds (well, the 2 year old lost interest with about 10 minutes to go, but still pretty impressive.) It didn't pack the same kind of cleverness or character development as a Pixar movie, but still, worth seeing. And I predict it will become a Christmas Classic that will pop up on TV every year.

But if you haven't seen The Incredibles yet. . . well, then you are definitely missing out.

I know this is completely unrelated to this thread, but I know you guys are fans of the Violet Burning. Michael Pritzl is playing a show Friday night December 17th. Doors open at 7:30 and the show starts at 9 at The Mad Donkey [405 North Easton Rd., Willow Grove, Pa.] Call 215.659.0554 for more info. I don't know yet what the cover charge is going to be, but I would guess somewhere between $5 and $10.

Also just a heads up I know the whole band is going to be back in town in March, if I could find a venue to do the show. You guys could open...

5 president and World Happiness

Five presidents are on a plane: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton.
George Washington says, "I will make someone happy!" and throws a dollar bill off the plane.
Abraham Lincoln, not to be out done, says, "I will make five people happy!" and throws 5 one dollar bills off the plane.
Then Thomas Jefferson says, "That's nothing, I will make 500 people happy!" and throws 500 one dollar bills off the plane.
This whole time, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush stood in the corner wondering what to do on their turn. But then a giant, smug smile dancing across Bush's face.

He says, "I will make the WHOLE world happy!" and then throws Bill Clinton off the plane.

Kristen, I would love to open for the Violet Burning! It would be awesome. I really do love their stuff! As for a venue, there are two possibilities I could probably work out if I know far in advance when they will be here. First is the Garage in kennet. It's a place where a youth group meets and they have concerts rather regularly. I would guess that it holds about 250 people. The other option (the one I would like a lot more) would be the Everett theatre in Middletown DE. It's a beautiful building, it seats 4oo and has an amazing stage. Both places are a little bit hard to book, but with persistance (a lot of that in the case of the Garage) and an inside connection or two either one is possible. Let me know what you think. You could keep posting on here or email me at Ian@thelookmachine.com

Ian, this is not near as exciting as you opening for Violet Burning, but I was just informed of some upcoming concerts from Love Syndicate. Hoping you remember them. I gave you and Shane a CD of theirs last year. yes, well, I plan to invite some friends to the one in Wayne, Pa -- one being Shane. that is, if everything works out considering it is on the 23. Why have a told you this? I do not know :)

have a great Christmas!

Kristen, I think that I found another venue that would be just perfect for this concert! Email me and we can talk more about it.

I can feel the "dork" comments coming on; that's what I get for having a degree in electrical engineering...

Well, if you want to get seriously technical about it (you asked for it ;) ), computers don't "use" binary either. The binary number system is simply an abstraction to help *people* understand the electromagnetic operation of the machine known as the computer which makes voltage measurements with a finite number of results which don't necessarily need to be binary; that's just the modern convention. Yes, they did try 3-state logic systems (ternary) which were computers which wouldn't even use the binary abstraction to model them. The point is: computers have no capacity to understand our number system any more than they can understand, say, French.

One could also say a computer "uses" assembly language if you wanted to add another layer of abstraction. Then you could move up and say a computer "uses" a high level programming language. This computer language would use a human language in order to isolate the programming concepts from the basic computer operation in the mind of the programmer. This language could, indeed, be French. In this sense the computer would use (speak) French.

There's a clarifier for you. I guarantee there is no BS in this and it is all readily verifiable (if you actually wanted to do a thing like verifying all that boring information).

Hey Josh, what's up homie? For letting me know how much you liked my previous joke, here is another one for you Josh, my little buddy. enjoy

Bill Clinton and his driver were cruising along a country road one night when all of a sudden they hit a pig, killing it instantly. Bill told his driver to go up to the farm house and explain to the owners what had happened.

About 1 hour later Bill sees his driver staggering back to the car with a bottle of wine in one hand, a cigar in the other and his clothes all ripped and torn.

"What happened to you?", asked Bill. "Well, the Farmer gave me the wine, his wife gave me the cigar, and his 19-year old daughter was really frisky."

What in the world did you tell them?" asks Clinton. The driver replies, "I told them, 'I'm Bill Clinton's driver, and I just killed the pig.'"

Ian ( and Childish),
I know of a couple concerts with Love Syndicate going on in December. Here they are:

Tuesday, December 21
World Cafe Live, Philly
7:00

Thursday, December 23
The gryphon Cafe, Wayne PA ( this is the one i mentioned before.)

Monday, demeber 27
Grape St. Pub, Manayunk PA
9:30

only one thing, at the world cafe i dont think they will be playing alone. but, if they play with other people im sure theyll be worth listening to too.
These shows are going to be awesome. Youre so right, Childish, they are definitely one of the best bands to see Live. Josh, the lead singer, is fantastic. I went to a concert of theirs a while ago and the guy on bass was amazing also, im hoping hes still with them. do you know Noel, the celloist? ah, what an inspiration.... i really should pick it up. sorry, my own thought.

i was wondering, am i the only one who doesnt know who childish is? ha, its funny, i really dont know who anyone is on this thing unless it says "Ian" or "Collin" etc.

Ian, if you need any more info let me know.

do you know trans-siberian orchestra?

nevertooyoung, it's really easy to pick out the people who post here in real life.

Childish is a bearded girl.
Sarge is Childish's girlfriend.
Xerxes is always naked.
Jeremiah Johnson is George W. Bush.
Aaron R. wears a pocket protector and taped-together glasses.
Poncho is a 45-year-old man (lol! omg!).
MyNym wears a white robe and has a shiny halo over his head.
Simon looks disturbingly like [certain band member].

Avoid Childish at all costs. Unless you want to play poker.

ok, technically you're right, computers don't really use binary. but binary is pretty much an exact representation of the digital logic going on inside the computer. you could also say that computers use octal and hexidecimal number systems, since these are just different representations of binary. i thought about talking about programming language and assembly language but i figured i didn't need to go that in-depth :p

dear jerimiah,
i'm sorry, you misunderstood. i dont think murder is funny and i dont like being called your little friend. Quick question for the blogg: if Jesus was alive today, would he be a liberal or conservative? and using some anecdotal evidence try to back up your statement. I will start....liberal:
Pretty sure he was ant-deathpenalty.
Pretty sure he was for the seperation of church and state...not a big fan of the pharisees.
Not exactly a money hungry capitalist Luke 3:11
Shared everything, pretty Pinko wouldn't you say?
Oh and Jerimiah, my name is josh latshaw...stop patronizing me from behind your computer.

Jesus would be a conservative:

--For the death penalty, Leviticus 24:10-23 (doesn't get much clearer than this)
--Not for separation of church and state (the entire old testament) He didn't like the pharisees because they were evil, it had nothing to do with separation of church and state.
--Who ever said you had to be a money hungry capitalist to be a conservative?
--He shared all he had willingly, the state didn't forcibly take away what he had in order to "redistribute the wealth"
--Against abortion Psalm 139:13-16
--Homosexuality is a sin, Romans 1:27

Seth Watts (one of David's Big Meanie conservative brothers)

P.S. though not as mean as Mynym
P.S.S. Just thought I'd check out your blog to see whats happening in David's life. I won't bother you to much.

In the same way that Christ infuriated those who were looking to the promised Messiah to be a terrestial King of a earth-bound political kingdom, one who would lead a revolt against the unjust Roman occupation of Judea and re-establish David's Kingdom of Israel, Jesus would upset both liberals and conversatives who lay claim to him by being 100% apolitical, instead focusing on such things as the conditions of the heart, the soul, and personal salvation and ethics.

Of course, the full playing out of those truths would lead to sweeping changes, and WOULD have political implications, some of which would be cheered by libs and some by cons. . . .

YAY! thank you Jason! I don't really think it's about what party you are/what Jesus would be... I don't think it has to do with political affiliations, but rather individual issues... the point is not to be all the way repub or all the way democrat... it's to pick the candidate that best fits what is right... now I can't vote, but still. anyway, thanks!
