Pictures of Nepal

Well, I finally got some film developed from my trip to Nepal. Here are some of the pictures.

This is a Hindu temple, a common sight anywhere in the country. Nepal is the only official Hindu nation in the world. It is an amazingly spiritual country! Everyday life is tied up in ritual and tradition. Ancient and present blend into one surreal reality.

I took this picture from the back of an elephant. This is in Chitwan Royal National Park, one of the last places on earth where the one horned rhinoceros lives in freedom and relative safety.

You are looking at the main East-West highway accross the country. It winds for hundreds of kilometers along a river canyon. It is one of the most beautiful and terrifying roads in the world.

I'm disregarding the fat ugly naked man and moving on...

Let me tell you about this road. It is narrow, maybe just a tad bit wider than appleton (if you are from around here), if you're not from here than just picture any old country road. It is paved about half of the time, but frequient avalanches and mudslides obliterate it in the rainy season (which was when I was there). It traces the river through a really gorgous canyon, but the road frequently just right up to the edge with no gaurd rail. It's several hundred feet to the water below in a lot of places. That would be fine if it were a one way street, or if there was some hint of traffic laws. Unfortionately, that is not the case. Full sized busses and dump trucks are traveling both ways, and people pass each other whenever they want to. You will be approaching a cliff you can't see around, riding behind a buss or two, then the driver will suddenly swerve into the other "lane" and pass the buss. They just honk and hope for the best. It doesn't help to be driving along and see several busses and vans crashed and dangeling over the precipice. During this trip we saw several accidents, one place where half of a bridge had collapsed and a loaded dump truck crushed its way through the concrete and fell right over (we just passed on the side of the bridge still standing) and one buss being hauled on cables out of the canyon where it had crashed (we drove right over the cables as people were pulling it up).

At first it seems like total insanity, but as you watch carefully you start to find that though it is mad, there is a deffinate method and a rhythm. People also drive a lot slower than around here, so most accidents aren't that big of a deal. Once you get used to it, it's not scary anymore, just really fun.

(Sorry Guys, I hope you're not scarred for life... my 14-year-old brother found that picture for me, and I just couldn't resist)

Nepal is a wonderful place, rhinoceroses and all! But they are in desperate need of Jesus, so whenever you hear someone mention the tiny unsettled country of Nepal, please help the people in a way only Christians can by praying for them.

Also, by the way Shane, it's nice to see that you've slimmed down a bit there. I was worried about you.

Yeah. I really used to struggle with my weight. Then I went on this new diet, it's called anorexia. I've pretty much come through my overweight stages now. look at the aftershots here: http://www.purevolume.com/shanepalkovitz/photos
I think I'll go make a comercial about that now. before and after pictures, it will be qite stunning.
