Kurt Cobain

I just finished reading Heavier than Heaven a biography of Kurt Cobain.

I have to say, it was a very emotional experience. By the end, there were tears coming out of my eyes. And all throughout reading the chronicle of his tragic life, yet at the same time getting a peak of his genius and humanity, I had this great sense of loss. For his daughter, Frances Bean especially. And for myself, frankly.

Just a young teenager, I loved Nirvana. The way their sound just wiped the world clean of glam rock and made it all seem so hollow (which is was). . . I was so taken by their honesty, the reality, and the songs.

I know it may sound insane, but in late 1993 I started to really get the sense that I should write him a letter. Just to let him know that at least this one person appreciated him, that he was this precious child of God, that he deserved comfort and hope, that he was so. .. oh I don't know. . .special. And as difficult as it may be to sometimes tell, I thought that God was telling me to write this letter.

But I never wrote it. Things got busy. . . oh who knows. There is always time, right?

Well, you know the end to this particularly pitiful story. Kurt loads himself up with Heroin, and uses a shotgun to end his life here.

Would my letter made any difference? Probably not. Probably he wouldn't have even been able to read it. Probably he got lots of letters like this.

But now reading this account of his life, reading about his desperate loneliness, his hopelessness . . . just his general sense of worthlessness. I can see that the letter I would have written would have at least tried to really end that in a small way. Kurt, Kurt, no! Please don't keep walking down this path, stop writing this story with it's inevitable ending.

The book is filled with fascinating insights into this sad life. One I will mention just because it continues to stick with me. Kurt was backstage - their band was huge, Nevermind had just sold 8 million copies - and he sees an old friend, a lead singer of another Northwest band that was opening for them. They weren't particularly close, but when Kurt sees him he walks up to him and just falls into an embrace with him, where he clings and won't pull away for minutes.

Oh Kurt, if I could bring you back and figure out a way for it to all turn out differently, I would. You were special. You were worthy of hope and companionship. . . Kurt, I just pray that you are in an embrace now, one that will last longer than minutes, and one that will give you everything you were missing in this lifetime.

And I'm sorry for not writing that to you sooner.

Poncho, Who have you written to and who has responded to your letters? This is very interesting. I have never written a letter to anyone in a famous band.

Jayson J, you can write us a letter anytime you want. Anyone can. There is an open invitation because I love getting a real letter. There is something so exciting about getting something in the mail with your own name handwritten on the envelope. I always go to the post office and check my mail (I have a PO box) and there is stuff in there every single day, but it is always just a bunch of bills. People are always asking for money. So if you really want to brighten my day, feel free to send a real letter (just don't send me a bill).

haha yea thanks sha'uri and yea i hope you did well! Which ones? Haha the ones i've gotten responses from is switchfoot, Static Lullaby (very weird story to that lolz), Quinn from the Used, and erm I believe the starting line but that one was along time ago. lolz its cool especially since switchfoot is my fav band and i started to almost like cry ha its weird. And Quinn....well ha that was a year ago and i was practically obbessed with him so i wrote all sorts if things and i guess i think i said like before i die, i would love to get a letter from Quinn and yea *shrugs* i just got one lolz but it was short which was sad. wait no It was rockin! Hmmm actually this is the first time im telling anyone this cause...well....i have no clue why. What's cool though is my friend somehow managed to get a letter from My chemical romance which i hear they have no fan writing place and that they dont really answer mail. Oh yea Shane....he knows i wrote to switchfoot...lolz boy my letter was so weird. Ok well i have to write a letter to you guys one day. Oh and i also wrote to thursday...no response yet :( tis ok though their concert made up for it.

-btw, anyone can write to any band. Some bands, if you look very closely have an address on their cd for fan mail or you can get it by like maybe fanscape. Have fun writing!

Yeah, well, I got a letter from The New Kids on the Block. I mean, they pretty much told me that I was their favorite fan and that I should join their secret club for only the best fans. They were going to give me a discount on membership.ONLY $45.00... I think that says it all..

KURT COBAIN DIDN't COMMIT SUICIDE! COURTNEY HAD HIM KILLED!

Red about it here: www.justiceforkurt.com

(interesting site by the way, I read a lot of the stuff they have on there and it definitely makes you wonder.)

Snaky, I went to that site and while I had heard some whisperings about the murder theories before,i have to say I'm taking them more seriously now. Seems that Heavier than Heaven (which was still an excellent book), took a Courtney-inspired view, so I was pretty convinced it was suicide. AH! I normally know to be more skeptical. Anyway, now I am actually thinking he was perhaps murdered, which is in many ways sadder.

I couldn't find a motive, though. Why would Courtney have Kurt killed.

Poor FRANCES BEAN.
