The Marks of an Excellent Cover Song
I love a good cover song. Even with a band where I love their catalog of songs, I always get kind of excited to find out they've recorded a cover song. Sometimes a great cover song is one which is kind of rare, like "There She Goes" by Sixpence None the Richer. Or maybe it's one that most people have NEVER heard at all, like "Last Kiss" before Pearl Jam turned it into their biggest hit. Sometimes it's an older song that gets a fresh new feel, like "boys of summer" by the ataris ("saw a black flag sticker on a cadillac" -- no more deadhead) and sometimes it's just a completely different take on the song that demonstrates that the song itself is good, it's just the earlier interpretation that you didn't like so much -- like the Christina Aguilara song "Beautiful" as recorded by Clem Snide. I could go on and on, I think I have more than 200 cover songs on my iPod, and I really like most of them.
So two questions. . . what are some of your favorite cover songs?
And , what songs should the Look Machine cover? We're going to dedicate ourselves to learning more of them.

I think you guys should cover "OOps I did it again" by Britney. Jason should learn all the appropriate dance moves and wear the small school girl outfit too.
cover song = ?
A cover song is when one band learns and plays a song by another band. For instance, when we play "lose Yourself" by Eminem it's a cover song.
ha i like david's idea lolz...sha'uri, a cover song is a recording of a song that was first recorded or made popular by somebody else and then another person re-did it. Like What Jason said with the Ataris. Me personally i thougth Do you wanna dance by The Ramones was cool...ha sorry my friend gave me their cd :P and i think Jonny Cash rocks so that song Hurt. ALso Nirvana with Man who sold the world, Jimi Hendricks made some amazing cover songs, Counting crows made a good one one with big yellow taxi man i could go on and on. lolz and speaking of rage aganist the machine from the last post, the song kick out the jams was good. Yes yes i heart music and I practically love all "types" of rock except EXTREME screaming like Atreyu...woah lolz but Underoath is an exception cause they rock too much! I know a pretty good amount of music cause my friend works at a music store so i go around after hours and help out and listen to music pretty nice.
Ok and as for a song for you guys to cover? Honestly lolz i have no clue cause you guys are....different. To me, like you guys are not a particular genre or type of music. Thats why i love you guys! :) Ok too much typing
Ha im slow i just saw now that Jason asnwered your question. lolz ok *yawn* sleep
Johnny Cash's Hurt and Nirvana's Man Who Sold the World and 2 of the best all time!
"are" 2 of the best all time.
rocketman by BSF. Great cover.
A couple more, POD did a great job on Bullet the Blue Sky.
Torrie Amos was amazing on Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Landslide (by Stevie Nicks) has been covered by several artists, all of whom do a great job! The Smashing Pumpkins stand out in my mind as the best though.
All Along the Watch Tower (by Bob Dyllan) is one lucky song! It was covered by Jimy Hendrix, who played it very well, then again by Michael Hedges who added a whole new twist to it and does just an incredible job! These are probably my favorite covers.
The thing I love about a cover song is that, very often, you notice great aspects of the song that you never really appreciated before. Hearing Tori Amos cover "smells like teen spirit" gave me new respect for Kurt's writing ability. I also love Johny Cash's cover of U2's "One."
I love Travis' cover of " baby one more time" by britney spears and also tori amos' cover of "thank you" by led zepplin. That is actually my favorite. She is amazing at making songs that rock sound beautiful and haunting. Much like smells like teen spirit and "angie" by the stones on the "Winter" EP. (If I am not mistaken.) and U2 covers like none other. Oh, and I love REM doing that "i feel it in my fingers...I feel it in my toes...bah, bah bah bah bah...bah, bah,baaah."song.
Mer, those are all excellent cover songs. The first time I heard those Tori Amos songs, I just about fainted.
YEA jason! lolz I love those songs! Jonny Cash is so friggin awesome. ha ok well I havent listened alot to Tori Amos but it seems like shes very good. Yea i'll definately listen to her next time i get the chance. Ah i love thalking about music dont you? :D
well i think that you all should do cat steven's peace train song, i would like to hear that:)
Jason- I haven't heard "Love is Blindness by Sixpence and Nichole Nordman's version of Grace," yet. But I am especially curious about Sixpence's cover (I'm a diehard slocum/nash fan).
That CD sure has some awful songs on it, though... though I admit I like Audio A's rendition of Gloria.
O and I second the Cat Stevens idea.

That CD has some TERRIBLE songs on it, you're right!
Grace, All I Want is You, and Love is Blindness are all excellent; the rest not worth listening to. Not sure if I heard Gloria.
