Potential EP Artwork
JD had asked us to post some ideas. Well, here you go. Feedback is welcome, but don't be hurt if we don't take your advice. We can be stubborn like that.

Random musings from the rock group the Look Machine. We're trying to make it big. Observe if you'd like.

ok... I like the 3rd and 4th from the top, and the last one... :-D the second one icon kinda looks like a bloody heart or something... *shrug* how are ya'll?
i think i like #1 the best..
i like a lot of them but i also like the first one best!!
I think the beatles would like the first one the best.
i think the third one down is the best!!! so you should do it cause i carry your equipement.
the first one looks like name taken a little bit. i like them.
I agree above with shane...it does and I like it but I reeeally like the last and 3rd ones...
One is looking liek the fav lolz but call me weird...the last one is so cool to me :)
oh ya the 3rd one reminds me of underoath's first CD with the lights :)
Underoath rocks...and Name taken too shane ha
Cool! Thanks.
My opinionated feedback:
The first one looks like something the Choir or some other independent, alternative late 80's band would do. While I like it, I don't think it fits you.
The lookmachine logo on the second looks cool. The bridge totally doesn't.
Middle two- like the color. Esp the one that looks like a blurred London shot. (?). I'm not sure what meaning the (still visible) "world report" has... cryptic? Or distracting? Or simply a photo-shopped CNN picture? Also, while the color is cool, I'm not sure it matches the general LM vibe... I would not tend to call your music iridescent.
The congregation outside- probably my definite favorite. It has an Innocence Mission-artsy vibe. I really like it. It reminds me of the songs Fanatic and All Our Hands... as far as the title, I'm not sure if your music is chorus-y. But as far as general vibe, my definite favorite.
Angel- cliche and too overtly spiritual.
Peace!
Josh
alright, i put on some TLM music to put myself in the mood. my thoughts:
i like "a pattern of words" better than "join in the chorus." when i saw "join in the chorus," i thought of a worship band, which isn't really the impression you're going for.
are you guys still looking for title suggestions or have you narrowed it down to those two?
as for the covers...
i like no. 1 but i don't think it fits you guys. i like the photo on the second one, as well as the basic concept of an unaltered photo. i like simple album covers.
(the logo on the second one looks like a heart to me, which is a little creepy. anyone else think that?)
no. 3 is a little too... "busy" for me. i liked no. 4 better, if you were going to use one of those. no. 5 is good, but i don't think it fits, just like no. 1. no. 6 is very nicely done, but i'm not totally sure how i feel about it.
other thoughts - what about having you guys on the cover? as long as xerxes is in the back/blurry/behind something, you aren't a bad looking bunch. ah ha.
also - i like when the cover art is related to the album title (like pictures no. 1 and no. 5 are great examples). so maybe for "a pattern of words, you could do something cool with newspapers or a book. or...
idea - all of you write something random on pieces of paper, then find a way to fit it on a cover, whether jumbled together or kept seperate. you'd have all your different styles on there, saying unrelated things. or maybe something about yourselves. that would be interesting.
or maybe you could have a rumpled, ink-stained, edited page of lyrics from one of your songs with words crossed out and little notes on it...
Nice thoughts guys. You put some time into those responses. Thans.
We are still open to different titles. "A pattern of words" is simply a salute to an old weblog regular who was constantly ascribing very complex and dark meanings to our "patterns of words." As much as we dislike accusations of being satanic homosexual nazis who channel demons into the world (that guy had some real zingers) we feel that there are messages to be found in our lyrics, so we took one of his favorite insults and turned it into a name with a more positive meaning.
I also like artwork and names that go together Snake Man. Thanks for your tip about the papers with writing. That would be very cool to work that into the concept somehow. JD I said the same thing about the innocense mission look. That isn't a bad thing, but we are pretty different from them.
Anyone have title suggestions?
Good suggestions all, we're still playing around with it obviously. And no, we haven't arrived at a title yet, but we put some stuff in just for kicks.
By the way, none of the photos here were altered with photoshop (well, except for the first one). I like experimenting with photography in low light and long shutter times and see what happens.
I like them.
They look really good, Jason.
No photoshop? that's awesome.
Um, duh, obviously the photo of the angel was altered too.
I like the 7th one.
I like the third! :-)
Hokay, there's some interesting artwork here. I think that the first one is beautiful. It's a glorious photo of Lyric, but I don't think it's right for The Look Machine, for a couple reasons. First, I feel like I've seen too many kids on the covers of too many albums. Can't name any off the top of my head (huh, go figure), but I think the idea is overdone. Second, I don't think that it really jives with TLM's sound. It makes me think of a folksy album, such as IM or Andrew Peterson (oh yeah, he's one who put his child on an album).
I think that the third one is the most dynamic and visually interesting. The artwork may be a little too flowy, giving a My Bloody Valentine sort of impression, but I don't think that's a big concern. The fiberoptic lights do look like fiberoptic lights. You might want to smooth those so they don't look so concrete, which they do look, even with their translucency. It has nice motion, very nice colors, and I DO think that these colors represent TLM well. If you want me to go into more detail on that, I'd be glad, but it's pretty subjective, just my opinion.
I do think that if you stick with the EP title, a pattern of words, then you might choose different words, possibly words that don't immediately seem to have a pattern like the phrase, "world report" has.
Rock on, guys. I'm looking forward to hearing the EP.

Thanks for the detailed feedback Mike. I appreciate the thought you gave it. I am really glad that you chose one because this is the only other option at this point.
